About Gas Logs

Gas logs are an affordable and efficient way to transform a wood burning fireplace into gas. They provide the ambience and warmth of a fire without the mess and inconvenience of chopping wood or hauling in logs. Most gas logs are either ceramic or refractory cement that’s been painted and fashioned to look like natural wood burning logs, with the ability to withstand high heat. Brands, such as Real Fyre, include steel reinforcing rods inside the gas logs, providing a higher degree of structural integrity.

Types of Gas Logs

Gas Logs are either vented or vent free (also called unvented or ventless).

Vented Gas Logs are best when your main goal is ambience. They must be installed in fireplaces with an open chimney or flue for proper ventilation. They deliver yellow flames that dance on and around the gas logs and are the most realistic option.

Vent Free Gas logs are your go to logs when you want heat. They do not require venting, thereby pouring the heat into your living space. The flame height is typically less than what you’ll see with a vented gas log set and the flames come up in between the logs. Check your local codes to ensure vent free gas logs are allowed in your area.

How Do Gas Logs Work?

Gas Log are fueled by either natural gas or liquid propane (LP). They can be installed in most wood burning, masonry, or factory built fireplaces that are certified for gas logs. Your choice of gas is piped into your fireplace through the wall of the fireplace and connected to the burner for your gas logs with a flexible supply line.

The gas is controlled one of three ways: by a knob, by remote, or a safety key valve on the outside of the fireplace. Heat resistant gas logs are stacked on top of the burner and the gas flows through the burner. A bed of sand or lava rock lines the floor of your firebox and is used to disperse the flames.

Gas logs come in various sizes and designs. Always purchase a log set that allows for proper ventilation around the logs inside the fireplace. The minimum fireplace requirements are typically located in the installation manual for the gas logs.

FAQs on Gas Logs

Q1 - How long do gas logs last?

Ans: The short answer is it varies based on the quality of your gas logs and the frequency of use. Ceramic logs tend to be the most durable and hold up well under high heat. While logs of lesser quality have a lifespan of 3 - 5 years, more quality logs, when well maintained, can last 10 years or more.

Q2 - What are the best gas logs?

Ans: There are many great brands, but R.H. Peterson Real Fyre gas logs top our list. Since 1949, Real Fyre gas logs have been manufactured in the USA. They offer over 40 styles in vented gas logs and vent free gas logs with multiple control options. Real Fyre gas logs have steel reinforcing rods on the inside, which provide a higher degree of structural integrity.

Q3 - Why do gas logs smell?

Ans: For vented gas logs, smelling is not typical and usually occurs when the gas logs are not venting properly, the gas logs are improperly placed, or the gas logs need to be cleaned. When vent free gas logs smell, it’s a by-product of the chemicals that are used when the logs are made. The odor will tend to go away after the logs are seasoned and the chemicals burn off. The smell is less noticeable with more quality vent free gas log sets. If you have vent free gas log in a natural fireplace with a vent, you can open the vent, allowing the fumes to escape. If you have a vent free fireplace with vent free gas logs, you can crack a window. Although they are 99% efficient, they do require fresh air intake. For those with sensitive noses, vented gas logs may be a better option.

Q4 - Who makes the most realistic gas logs?

Ans: R.H. Peterson Real Fyre gas logs are our pick for the most realistic vented and vent free gas logs. They are available in over 40 styles, and add beauty to your home decor, with or without a fire. Real Fyre gas logs have a lower iron content which makes the logs less prone to oxidation and discoloration. Hand-crafted and hand-painted with unmatched realism.

Q5 - How can I make my gas logs more realistic?

Ans: To make your gas logs look as realistic as possible, start with quality gas logs! Select gas logs that have intricate detail that replicates real wood. Select vented or vent free gas logs that have an ember bed that simulate glowing embers that you’d see with natural fire. Accessorize with pine cones or wood chunks designed for use with gas logs.

Q6 - Do gas logs need to be replaced?

Ans: Customers often wonder when it’s time to ditch their gas logs for something new. The following are signs that you should consider having your gas log replaced, or at least serviced. When your burner pan is warped, the valve seizes, the grate is wearing thin, or your gas logs begin deteriorating. Less expensive gas logs will give you about 3-5 years of use before you may experience signs that they will soon need to be replaced. Brands, such as Real Fyre, can last well over 10 years with proper maintenance. They also offer a Limited Lifetime Warranty on the gas logs themselves.
