Vent free (also called ventless or unvented) gas logs are increasing in popularity as they are an incredibly efficient way to bring the warmth of a fire into your home without the messiness of burning natural wood.

Fueled by natural gas or liquid propane (LP), they are installed into a wood burning fireplace or an approved vent free firebox. When operated with the damper closed, heat will pour into the room, making them the perfect solution for a room that sits over a slab.

It’s not uncommon for vent free gas logs to have a smell, particularly when they’re first installed. Without teaching a chemistry lesson, the simplest answer is it’s a byproduct of burning gas without a venting system. Brands that are of higher quality, such as Real Fyre, tend to have less of an odor; some customers report not smelling anything at all, or the smell fades after the seasoning period of the vent free gas logs. Less expensive brands, due to the materials used to make the vent free gas logs will tend to have more of an odor. If you have a sensitive nose, vent free gas logs may not be the best option for you. Alternatively, if you install vent free gas logs in a woodburning fireplace, you can vent the unit 10%, allowing gas to escape up the chimney while still providing a substantial amount of heat to the room.

Always check with your local building department to be sure that vent free gas logs are legal to install in your area.

FAQs on Vented Free Gas Logs

Q1 - Which is better vented or ventless gas logs?

Ans: It’s a personal choice and depends on your heating goals. If ambience is your main objective, then go with a vented gas log. If you are looking for heat, then ventless gas logs are the way to go.

Q2 - Are ventless fireplaces illegal?

Ans: Ventless (aka Vent Free or Unvented) gas logs are legal in most states. However, there are a couple of states where they are illegal. In addition, there are some local municipalities that do not allow ventless gas logs. If you have questions about the legality of ventless fireplaces in your community, contact your local building department.

Q3 - Why does my vent free gas fireplace smell?

Ans: When vent free gas logs smell, it’s a by-product of the chemicals that are used when the logs are made. The odor will tend to go away after the logs are seasoned and the chemicals burn off. The smell is less noticeable with more quality vent free gas log sets. If you have vent free gas log in a natural fireplace with a vent, you can open the vent, allowing the fumes to escape. If you have a vent free fireplace with vent free gas logs, you can crack a window. Although they are 99% efficient, they do require fresh air intake. For those with sensitive noses, vented gas logs may be a better option.
