Gas logs are an affordable and efficient way to transform a wood burning fireplace into gas. They provide the ambience and warmth of a fire without the mess and inconvenience of chopping wood or hauling in logs. Most gas logs are either ceramic or refractory cement that’s been painted and fashioned to look like natural wood burning logs, with the ability to withstand high heat. Types of Gas Logs

Gas Logs are either vented or vent free (also called unvented or ventless).

Vented Gas Logs are best when your main goal is ambiance. They must be installed in fireplaces with an opening chimney or flue for proper ventilation. They deliver yellow flames that dance on and around the gas logs and are the most realistic option.

Vent Free Gas logs are your go to logs when you want heat. They do not require venting, thereby pouring the heat into your living space. The flame height is typically less than what you’ll see with a vented gas log set and the flames come up in between the logs. Check you local codes to ensure vent free gas logs are allowed in your area.

How Do Gas Logs Work?

Gas Log are fueled by either natural gas or liquid propane (LP). They can be installed in most wood burning, masonry, or factory built fireplaces that are certified for gas logs. Your choice of gas is piped into your fireplace through the wall of the fireplace and connected to the burner for your gas logs with a flexible supply line.

The gas is controlled one of three ways: by a knob, by remote, or a safety key valve on the outside of the fireplace. Heat resistant gas logs are stacked on top of the burner and the gas flows through the burner. A bed of sand or lava rock lines the floor of your firebox and used to disperse the flames.

Gas logs comes in various sizes and designs. Always purchase a log set that allows for proper ventilation around the logs inside the fireplace. The minimum fireplace requirements are typically located in the installation manual for the gas logs.
